Xiao Wang
Liminal Blue
April 15 - May 28, 2022
Deanna Evans Projects is pleased to present Liminal Blue, a solo exhibition of new paintings by Xiao Wang. Liminal refers to a state of transition and the emotional uneasiness that comes along with being on the cusp of change. Emphasized by the color blue, Wang dissects this space of in-between. Depicting scenes with maximalist settings, often inspired by real-life protagonists, in obscure, minimal backgrounds, the paintings lead viewers to feel a sense of uncertainty or disorientation.
There is a theme of duality in these works — the inclusion of narratives without context, the realistic rendering of obscure feelings and the restless yet quiet scenery. Wang is constantly weaving dream-like magical realist images with the hyper-realistic rendering of figures and foliage. Overall, the exhibition reflects a personal and collective narrative of struggling to cope with anxiety about the future while endeavoring to enjoy the moments of daily life.
Life, as well as these paintings, are a beautiful accumulation of contradictions.
