Jonathan Allmaier

Jonathan Allmaier was born in Catlin, NY.  His work is represented in New York by James Fuentes. Allowing the physical qualities of painting—pigment, scale, stretcher, canvas—and the alchemical relationship between them to guide his hand, Jonathan Allmaier produces abstract compositions with as little interference from himself as possible. As he explains, “It is better for the paintings and for us if the paintings make themselves, so I am the studio assistant for the paintings.” He begins by grinding his own pigments, constructing his mid- to large-scale stretchers, and priming his canvases. Allmaier then lets these readied canvases dictate their content, classifying them based on a descriptive system he devised, and hoping that the results, ranging from colored smudges on a spare ground to interlocking geometric shapes, speak for themselves.
